The Workshop

Delve deep into Scotlands past by recreating your very own Highlands cup with traditional tools including the carving axe, knife and gouge. In this 2 day workshop we will be deepening our connection to the land through following in the footsteps of past makers and making our own beautiful and practical cup. 

We’ll be working towards making a replica of a cup found at the site of the Corran Ferry between Mull and Fort William

You will learn what is the best wood to use for dinking vessels, how to dry and stop the cups from splitting and the use tools safely.   

The course is delivered by Tom (aka Wooden Tom) who is a greenwood worker based in the Cairngorms. With a strong environmentally conscious drive he uses hand tools to create wooden household items. Cups however are his main passion, ever since a visit to the archives of the National museum of Scotland blew his mind with an inspirational 2500 year old wooden cup.

It all takes place in our workshop in Mull over a long weekend. To allow travel time we start at lunchtime on Friday 7th and finish after Lunch on Sunday 9th of May.

Camping or parking a campervan by the workshop and use of the workshop domestic space is included in the course fee. Our two yurts are availble for the weekend to upgrade from camping and get a nice bed and wood stove at the end of the day. If you’d like to have 2 people sharing a yurt please get in touch before booking as we will reduce the rate.

We include a simple soup lunch on the first day but otherwise the week is self catering.
