Archipelago Folkschool connects people with craft. We are a Community Interest Company and a collaborative social enterprise. We aim to be as inclusive, open and encouraging as possible. We run short residential craft courses in beautiful places, events that teach skills but also encourage participation in communities and connection with the environment.
Our approach is interdisciplinary as much as possible - our lives are not lived as neat sections so our making shouldn't be either. We work at the boundary between expression and engineering; art and science; the human built and the naturally occurring. We are inspired by folkschools around Scandinavia and America as well as the pioneering work of the GalGael Trust in Glasgow.
So far in 2018 we've ran two week long boatbuilding workshops - one in Knapdale and one on Mull. We've attended two events too - Scottish Series in Tarbert and The Royal Highland Show near Edinburgh. At the Royal Highland Show we built a boat over the event and launched it live on BBC Scotland!
In the next few months we'll be working on our new programme of events which will run from Autumn 2018 to Autumn 2019! If you'd like to be the first to see what we're doing sign up to our mailing list at the bottom of the page and follow our facebook and twitter pages for more information
We want to build the network of people we work with - if you could teach a workshop or offer a space or support the project in some way please get in touch.
